The 2023 Toyota RAV4 is the most recent development in this historic line of compact crossover SUVs. Toyota first introduced the RAV4 to the United States in 1994 and it was the first SUV-type vehicle any manufacturer placed on a unibody platform. Since then, the RAV4 has seen numerous changes to its safety, design, and technology. In 2023, Toyota continued its tradition of updating the RAV4. Keep reading to learn about the 2023 Toyota RAV4 updates you can enjoy from this model year including technology, comforts, entertainment, and safety updates.

Grades

Toyota introduced a new grade to the RAV4 in the 2023 model year, bringing the total number of grades to five. These are the LE, XLE, Adventure, Limited, and TRD Off-Road grades. Depending on the grade you choose, you get different technology features, exterior and interior colors, and materials for the interior of the vehicle. This can also change the performance packages you can choose from, especially for the TRD Off-Road grade, since it comes with an offroading package to help you navigate difficult terrain while tackling tasks outside the city and beyond the pavement.

For the exterior colors, you have access to 16 different colors across the five grades of the SUV. You can choose from the following:

  • Magnetic Gray Metallic with an Ice Edge roof.
  • Cavalry Blue with a Midnight Black Metallic roof.
  • Magnetic Gray Metallic.
  • Lunar Rock.
  • Wind Chill Pearl.
  • Ice Cap.
  • Cavalry Blue.
  • Midnight Black Metallic.
  • Ruby Flare Pearl.
  • Blueprint.
  • Silver Sky Metallic.
  • Lunar Rock with an Ice Edge roof.
  • Wind Chill Pearl with a Midnight Black Metallic roof.
  • Magnetic Gray Metallic with a Midnight Black Metallic roof.
  • Silver Sky Metallic with a Midnight Black Metallic roof.
  • Cavalry Blue with an Ice Edge roof.

Interior Materials

Depending on the grade you choose, the interior of the vehicle can have a different feel. At the lowest grades, you get a soft textured cloth and hard plastics inside the vehicle. At higher grades, you can get faux leather materials throughout the interior, and nicer plastics to complement the faux leather. Beyond this, the higher grades also provide additional materials for the steering wheel and the shift knob, such as faux leather, creating a unified feeling inside the vehicle and adding additional comfort in a minor way before the actual comfort features Toyota added to the vehicle become apparent.

Performance

While Toyota didn’t change the engine of the RAV4 for 2023, it did give some grades of the vehicle additional options for drive trains. For example, the 2023 RAV4 Adventure has a front-wheel drive and an all-wheel drive option. This allows the SUV to have better control on rough or wet surfaces. In the Adventure, there’s an option to disconnect the rear axle from drive power to increase fuel efficiency. According to the EPA, the RAV4 in front-wheel drive versions can get around 35 mpg on the highway.

There is some variation in the all-wheel drive versions, with a slightly lower EPA rating of 33 mpg. Even so, these estimated fuel ratings make the RAV4 comparable to other crossover SUVs in its class and an excellent option for its price.

Comfort

The comfort in the 2023 Toyota RAV4 can vary a lot based on the grade. At the LE grade, there’s a useful storage shelf and plenty of cubbies to place objects such as books and devices. It also has an ergonomic feel, which helps drivers feel more comfortable in the vehicle immediately compared to some larger SUVs. At the higher grades, the 2023 RAV4 has premium materials which just increase the comfort over the LE grade. While the LE has a single-zone climate control system, the higher grades have a dual-zone system to keep everyone comfortable no matter the distance.

At the higher grades, you also get power-adjustable seats to help you and your passengers drive in comfort wherever you go. Finally, you can enjoy heated front seats at some of the higher grades, keeping you warm even on the coldest days of the year. If you’re driving in the summer you can turn this system off to keep cool during the summer months.

Entertainment

The real overhaul for the 2023 RAV4 came in its entertainment and safety systems. For entertainment, the trims below Limited come with an 8-inch touch screen infotainment system that you can control straight from the panel. It gives you options such as an optional navigation system and access to the SUV’s JBL premium sound system. At the Limited and TRD Off-Road grades, the infotainment system expands to a 10.5-inch display. You can also choose to get an optional wireless charging pad for your smartphone.

Beyond these options, the 2023 RAV4 gets a 4G LTE mobile hotspot to keep you connected to the internet and phone no matter where you drive. Finally, the SUV comes with connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety

In the 2023 model year, Toyota made several driver-assisting features standard across all RAV4 grades. These are automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. If you want more features, you can add them as optional features. These are blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert to help you stay aware of your surroundings at all times. So far, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports zero recalls for the 2023 Toyota RAV4 and good ratings across its crash test categories.
