Engine and Performance

Toyota gave the Tundra a complete redesign for 2022. The traditional V-8 engine is out, replaced by a twin-turbocharged V-6. This unit can put out 389 horsepower and is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The second power train option is a hybrid setup. It pairs the V-6 engine with an electric motor to create an output of 437 horsepower. It’s also paired with the 10-speed automatic.

When it comes to fuel economy, the base powertrain gets 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Opt for the hybrid setup and you’ll get better fuel economy, although official mpg figures are not yet available.

Towing and Cargo Beds

If you equip the Tundra correctly, you’ll be able to tow up to 12,000 pounds. This full-sized truck can also haul up to 1,900 pounds in its cargo bed.

The best options to get the most out of the Tundra’s towing abilities are the base powertrain and rear-wheel drive. All Tundra models can tow at least 8,300 pounds, so even if you choose a different setup, you’ll still have plenty of capability for most occasions.

There are three bed lengths for you to choose from with the Tundra. The longest bed measures 8 feet, 1 inch in length. The mid-sized bed is 6 feet, 5 inches long, and the shortest bed measures 5 feet, 6 inches in length. Remember that not all bed lengths can be paired with every cab, so you’ll want to consider which of the two cab options is right for you before you can make a final decision about the cargo bed.

Tundra Cabs

There are two cabs on offer with the Tundra. The smaller option is called the Double Cab. Its rear row of seats is suitable for kids or teens and can carry adults on short trips. The Double Cab can be paired with the long cargo bed or the mid-sized one.

The CrewMax also seats five people, but it offers significantly more legroom for rear-seat passengers. The CrewMax can be paired with the mid-length or short cargo bed.

Both cabs are fitted with cloth upholstery in their base setup. If you move up through the trims, you can get synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and genuine leather upholstery.

Infotainment and Safety Tech

The 2022 Tundra’s base infotainment system is led by an 8-inch screen. If you opt for the Double Cab, you get a six-speaker stereo, while the CrewMax is equipped with a nine-speaker stereo.

You can adjust some of the functions in the Tundra by using voice recognition, which is activated by saying, “Hey, Toyota.” You can also control various features through your phone thanks to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. These compatibility features allow you to access your phone’s apps via the infotainment screen or stream your favorite music.

Other standard infotainment features in the Tundra include USB ports, a wireless hot spot, and satellite radio. You can upgrade to a whopping 14-inch infotainment screen and a 12-speaker premium stereo. Wireless device charging is also on offer, so you can ensure your phone has a full battery while you’re on the go.

The Tundra also boasts a strong selection of standard safety features. The forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and forward automatic emergency braking features are designed to help you detect potential risks up ahead and avoid accidents. When you get on the highway, the lane keep assist and lane departure warning systems will help you drive safely. You also get an adaptive cruise control feature that can adjust your speed to make sure you maintain a safe distance from the motorists up ahead of you.

You can upgrade to a head-up display so you can monitor how your truck is performing while you’re behind the wheel. Other optional safety upgrades include a surround-view parking camera and rear cross traffic alert.

Tundra Trims

There are six trims for you to choose from if you’re buying a 2022 Tundra. These are SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, and TRD Pro. The easiest way to narrow down your trim choice is to start by deciding what you want your truck to be capable of doing. That’s because not all cab and cargo bed configurations are available in each trim.

The SR trim is only available with the smaller Double Cab, which you can pair with the two longer cargo beds. If you want the larger CrewMax setup, you’ll need to move up to at least the SR5 trim.

The Limited trim adds synthetic leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats. You also get your hands on the larger infotainment screen. Both cabs are offered in this trim.

The Platinum trim adds genuine leather upholstery and heated rear seats. You’ll also find a power outlet and lighting in the cargo bed. Only the larger cab is offered in the Platinum trim.

If you enjoy off-roading, the TRD Pro is the trim to go for. It features an off-roading suspension, multi-terrain monitor, a locking rear differential, and crawl control, which allows you to shift smoothly through the low gears. The TRD Pro is also only offered with the CrewMax cab.
