The Toyota brand is yet again making efforts to lead the way in pushing forth technology and innovation within the automotive industry. For the automaker, it’s not only about embracing the ideas associated with technology and innovation; it’s also about putting those ideas to use in a functional manner. A new car sharing system called Getaround is a peer-to-peer sharing service that lets renters use other people’s cars. For as low as $5 an hour, renters can use cars that are a part of the service. In return, the owner of the car being used receives a portion of the fees for their car. As Getaround has gained traction, companies like the Toyota brand have invested money in the service. Now, the automaker plans to test an all-new car sharing system that allows users to use their smartphones to lock and unlock doors, as well as start the cars. This keyless Smart Key Box system is meant to streamline the entire process, making it easier for all involved. Here’s how it works: a user’s smartphone will have codes that access the smart key box inside vehicles within the program, and when the phone gets close to the vehicle, the codes are verified. Thus far, the only Toyota model in which this system is functional is the Toyota Prius.
