dashboard lights toyota service

Toyota Dashboard Lights

If you notice something wrong with your Toyota while you’re driving around Jacksonville, Florida, you should have the problem diagnosed at Keith Pierson Toyota as soon as possible. Detecting and fixing problems promptly can help prevent major issues that require expensive repairs. So, how do you know if your vehicle is experiencing a problem? One of the easiest ways to identify car issues is to check the warning lights in your dashboard. Follow this useful guide to learn what different dashboard lights mean.

Check Engine Light

Image via Flickr by CJ Isherwood

The check engine light may appear due to a variety of reasons, from overheating to low oil pressure. It can also mean that the oil cap is loose, open, or cracked, which causes fuel to evaporate. If this light illuminates, it’s advisable that you pull over and inspect your gas cap and other parts of your vehicle. If it’s blinking, stop driving right away. In most cases, a flashing check engine light is a sign of a major problem that can make your car unsafe to drive or lead to severe engine damage if ignored.

Oil Pressure Light

The oil pressure light is the old-fashioned oil can symbol in your dashboard. When this light comes on, it indicates that the oil pump isn’t properly circulating oil throughout the engine. This may result from low oil levels or a faulty oil pump. You should have the problem addressed immediately because improper lubrication can cause damage to your engine.

Engine Temperature Warning Light

When the engine temperature indicator lights up, it means you have an overheated engine. Usually, this has something to do with the coolant, but it can also occur due to an engine problem. Take your car to a service center as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Battery Alert

An illuminated battery symbol in your dashboard indicates a problem with your car’s charging system. More often than not, it happens because your battery is running out of juice. If you have a low battery, you’ll probably see the clock fading or headlamps dimming. Don’t wait too long to have your battery checked or you may find yourself stranded with a car that won’t start. It’s worth noting that the culprit can also be a loose or worn battery cable or damaged alternator belt.

Low Fuel Indicator

Most drivers should know what the low fuel indicator means. When this light is on, it isn’t a good idea to assume you have enough fuel left to make it to your destination if you still have a considerable distance to go. Congested traffic or bad weather can cause your fuel to run out sooner than you think, so it’s best to fill up at the closest gas station.

Tire Pressure Warning Light

The recommended tire pressure may vary from one vehicle to another, but it’s usually 30 to 35 pounds per square inch. Check your owner’s manual to find out the ideal tire pressure for your specific Toyota vehicle. If the pressure in any of your tires is too low or too high, the tire pressure warning light will come on. Driving with over-inflated or under-inflated tires can jeopardize your safety and cause damage to your car.

Brake Warning Light

Engaging the parking brake will cause the brake warning light to turn on. However, if the light doesn’t go away after you release the parking brake, it’s an indication that you may have a brake problem. Some of the possible causes include low brake fluid levels, worn brake pads or discs, or a problem with the anti-lock brake system.

Anti-Lock Brake Warning Light

The anti-lock brake system serves the function of keeping your vehicle in contact with the road. If you notice an illuminated “ABS” warning in your dashboard, it’s a sign that this system isn’t working properly. To minimize your risk of accidents, you should have the issue checked at a Toyota service center right away.

Bear in mind that your anti-lock brake system performs a self-check every time you start your car, causing the “ABS” light to turn on momentarily. If it goes off after a few seconds, it means the system is in good working order.

Traction Control Light

When the traction control light appears, it doesn’t mean your vehicle is experiencing a problem. Instead, the purpose of this indicator is to let you know that your car’s traction control system is activated.

The traction control system can automatically detect if one wheel is moving faster than another. If it finds that one of your wheels is slipping, it’ll apply the brakes to help your vehicle regain traction. This system is particularly useful when you’re driving on slippery surfaces during the rainy or winter season.

Traction Control Malfunction Warning

The traction control malfunction warning lights up when something is wrong with the traction control system of your vehicle, which can be a damaged sensor or another problem. In some vehicles, the same control module operates both the traction control system and the anti-lock brakes. In this case, the light may also come on when your anti-lock brake system is faulty.

Seat Belt Reminder

If you forget to put on your seat belt, you’ll see an illuminated seat belt reminder light. Since failure to buckle up can lead to severe injuries in the event of an accident, it’s important to heed the seat belt reminder when it comes on.

Air Bag Indicator

The air bag warning light signals that one of your air bags or the entire air bag system is malfunctioning. Your air bags help keep you safe during a collision, so you should have the problem fixed as soon as you can.

Ignoring any of the warning lights in your dashboard can increase your risk of accidents or cause further damage to your vehicle. Why Buy Used?

When deciding to buy a car, most people have a set budget and need to make a choice between a new or a used one. While making this choice is a purely personal decision, there are some major advantages that come from choosing the latter.

You’ll Be Spending Less Money

The most obvious reason for buying a pre-owned vehicle is the fact that it’s less expensive than when it was new. Although an item losing some of its value after being used is normal, most vehicles have a depreciation rate that’s far steeper than the depreciation in quality. It’s estimated that cars lose around 20% of their value each year, meaning that a 3-year-old car can cost around 40% of its original value while still being in tiptop shape. Also, if you decide to sell it in a few years, you won’t be losing as much money as you would be if you had been its original owner.

There are also other ways in which you can save money by choosing to buy a used vehicle instead of a new one. Some unavoidable costs, such as insurance premiums, are proportional to the car’s estimated value, so you would be paying much less for a car that’s a few years old than for a new one. Also, when buying a new car there are other costs that you need to keep in mind, such as registration fees. When buying a used one, the only thing you have to pay upfront is its asking price. At Keith Pierson Toyota, you have the option to trade in your vehicle to help offset the costs of purchasing one of our used vehicles!

It’s Better for the Environment

While the case for protecting the environment by buying a gas-powered car may seem like a bit of a stretch, buying used instead of new does exactly that. The manufacturing process for making a vehicle from scratch is a very complex one and involves mining prime resources, making components, assembling them, shipping the final product to the dealership, and numerous other steps along the way. When you’re buying a vehicle that’s already been on the streets for a few years, all those steps have already been covered. From that moment on, the only environmental impact comes from directly using it.

You’ll Be Getting a Much Better Car

Another major advantage that you can benefit from when buying used is the fact that, for the same budget, you can buy a significantly better car. Due to the earlier-mentioned depreciation rate, you can get a premium pre-owned vehicle for the price of a lesser-equipped new one. Even if you have your heart set for a particular make and model, getting a used one instead of a new one can get you many more premium features, like leather upholstery, a more powerful engine, more safety features, extended infotainment functions, and much more.

If You Buy From a Dealer, You’ll Get a Thoroughly Inspected Vehicle

Although a new car comes with a full warranty from the manufacturer, returning to the dealer to fix various faults that may occur is still a major hassle. If you buy a used car from a certified dealer, however, you can be sure that it has been thoroughly inspected by certified technicians and that the odds of something happening to it in the foreseeable future are very slim.

Although its original manufacturer’s warranty may have expired, when buying a used vehicle from a dealer you usually benefit from the dealer’s own warranty. Also, you can be sure it’s in their best interest that you’re satisfied with your purchase because they want you to choose them again in a few years’ time when you are ready to change your vehicle again.

You’ll Know Much More About That Particular Model

When buying a new car, you’re usually getting the latest model. While this has its obvious advantages, such as you getting the latest automotive technology, that particular model hasn’t yet passed the test of time. When that car model you’re buying has been on the market for a few years, you can extensively research it online, consulting user and manufacturer statistics to determine how reliable and safe it is.

Having the opportunity to research user and expert reviews can help you make a better decision, as you can research multiple models and see which one is more appreciated by its owners and by industry experts. You also have access to plenty of advice on how to get the most out of your vehicle, how to take advantage of various upgrade and tuning options, and other similar perks.

It Can Improve Your Credit Score

If you decide to buy a used car with the help of an auto loan, not only will the payments likely be more affordable than for a used one, but you can also improve your credit score. The most important aspect of your credit score is making all your payments on time; simply doing that for the duration of your loan can work wonders for your rating.

Your credit score is also influenced by your credit mix, which means that it’s important to show you can manage multiple credits at the same time. Adding an auto loan to your existing loans can improve this credit mix, helping you access better credit conditions in the future.

Modern Cars Tend To Last Longer

The main concern for people who consider buying a used vehicle is the fact that it may break down more quickly than a new one. While this was a real issue a few decades ago, modern cars last longer, with modern cars lasting an average of 11.8 years. This means that if you buy a pre-owned car that’s a few years old you can realistically expect it to function without any major issues for about a decade. It also means that you may be getting a good deal if you decide to sell it in a few years.

While buying a new car has its own obvious advantages, there are still plenty of reasons why you’d be better off buying a used one. If you’re looking for a large selection of pre-owned vehicles in great condition, visit us at Keith Pierson Toyota and check out our used car inventory! We also are always cycling through various used specials, so be sure to check back frequently!

As one of the last unspoiled wetlands on the Atlantic Coast, Timucuan Preserve contains over 6,000 years of human and ecological history. Explore the salty marshes, hardwood forests, and sandy dunes of this well-preserved coastal land. Opportunities for outdoor activities abound, including fishing, kayaking, surfing, observing wildlife, and more. If you’ve never taken the time to discover all the Timucuan Preserve has to offer, you need to add this to your bucket list today.

View the slave quarters, barn, waterfront, plantation house, kitchen house, and more. Here, you’ll learn about the enslavement and freedom of those who worked the land for the plantation owners.

The first French colony in what was to become part of the United States, this 16th-century settlement tells the story of the first contact between Native Americans and Europeans. You’ll also discover how this town and its families survived, their religious traditions, and various territorial battles with neighboring peoples.

Situated in the northeastern corner of Florida, Jacksonville has a long and storied history. It was originally inhabited by Timucuan Indians then later established as the site of the French Huguenots’ Fort Caroline, the Spanish colonists’ San Matteo, and the British settlement of Cowford. In 1822, the city took on the name of Jacksonville for Andrew Jackson who was the military governor of Florida territory at the time. Learn more about this fascinating place.

The Stunning “Treaty Oak” Grows Here

Image via Flickr by James Willamor

Jacksonville is home to a breathtaking tree that’s known, somewhat mistakenly, as the “Treaty Oak.” This Live Oak (Quercus virginiana) has a wild octopus-like appearance with massive sprawling limbs. The tree is wider than it is tall, standing at a height of about 70 feet with giant branches that extend nearly 150 feet from the trunk. Many of these limbs reach nearly to the ground, giving the impression that the tree might scamper away at any moment.

The oak is estimated to be 250 years old, but it almost missed the chance to reach this ripe age. In the early 1900s, the tree sat within Dixieland Park. It was covered in lights and featured in some silent films. In the 1930s developers took an interest in the land and had plans to cut the tree down. In response, a Florida Times-Union journalist by the name of Pat Moran concocted a story claiming that an important peace treaty between Native Americans and Spanish settlers was signed beneath the tree.

The mighty oak was given the moniker the “Treaty Oak” and spared, though it was later revealed that the story was a mere fabrication. The tree sits in Jessie Ball duPont Park, which is named for a Garden Club member who also worked hard to help save the tree and donated some of the land around it. In 1995, a lightning protection system was installed for the tree, and cables were added to help support some of the limbs that had grown so large they threatened to damage the trunk. With care, arborists estimate the tree could live another 400 years.

Jacksonville is Bigger Than You Think

In 1967, Jacksonville was consolidated with the remainder of the surrounding county for the purpose of increasing its tax base. This grew the city’s footprint to 20 times its original size. Today, Jacksonville covers 875 square miles. This makes it the largest city by area in the continental United States. Only Alaska boasts cities that can top its square mileage. By population, Jacksonville is ranked 13th in the country with around 929,647 residents.

Jacksonville also boasts the largest urban park system in the United States. This includes 3 national parks, 7 state parks, and over 400 city parks covering over 80,000 acres. Among these beautiful natural destinations are the 46,000-acre Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, 4,000-acre Pumpkin Hill Creek Preserve State Park, and both Big Talbot Island and Little Talbot Island.

It Has the Oldest Farmer’s Market in Florida

In operation since 1938, the Jacksonville Farmers Market is the oldest farmers market in Florida to remain in operation. This destination has a long history of delivering local produce, fresh herbs, and mouthwatering Mayport shrimp to customers who flock to the area for food fresher than they can get anywhere else. The market also features artisan cheeses, oysters, lobster tails, and live plants.

The farmer’s market currently has more than 200 vendors and draws over a million visitors each year. Unlike other markets that are typically open just one day a week, this market is open daily. You can browse the wares from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. It’s only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The hours are slightly abbreviated on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.

The Six-Pack May Have Originated Here

There are some conflicting stories about the origins of the six-pack, but at least one version traces this handy method of beer delivery back to Jacksonville. William Ostner, a German immigrant hailing from St. Louis, opened Jax Brewing Company in 1913. When Prohibition hit, he rebranded and became Jax Ice & Cold Storage, a company that also produced “near beer,” a nearly non-alcoholic alternative that couldn’t contain more than 0.5% ABV.

Jax Brewing Company was restored in 1933 when Prohibition was repealed. World War II followed shortly after and threw another wrench in operations. Steel was requisitioned for the war effort, so Jax Brewing had to convert to bottles. The bottles were purportedly delivered in sacks of six, known as the “six-sack,” which would later give birth to the concept of the six-pack.

Burger King’s Origins Go Back to Jacksonville

Jacksonville is home to a lot of burger restaurants and it also figures in the history of the second-largest burger chain in the world. In 1953, Keith Kramer and Matthew Burns were looking to launch a restaurant that could compete with the original McDonald’s which started generating a buzz in San Bernardino, California when the McDonald brothers developed a fast and efficient burger and milkshake joint in 1948. McDonald’s wouldn’t become franchised until 1955. Its original claim to fame was its simple menu, affordable food, and speedy service.

Kramer and Burns namer their burger restaurant Insta-Burger and developer the Insta-Broiler, which was designed to be the most efficient machinery available for cooking a burger. The first location opened at 7146 Beach Blvd. The Insta-Broiler was a success and all subsequent franchises were required to include one. Unfortunately, Insta-Burger faced financial difficulties in 1959, and Miami-based franchisees David R. Edgerton and James McLamore bought the company, soon rebranding it as Burger King.

The original Insta-Burger location became a Burger King location for a period of time, but the company chose to close the flagship location in the early 1970s. The building later served as a Stan’s Sandwich location. This has since closed as well, and the building was sold to another potential restaurant owner.

Oil Changes

Aug 19, 2021

Regularly getting your oil changed is a key part of any good routine maintenance schedule for your vehicle. Keeping your oil fresh can help your engine have a longer life and improve performance. If you come to Keith Pierson Toyota in Jacksonville, we’ll be delighted to carry out an oil change for you. Here’s what you can expect and why you should make regular oil changes a priority.

How Often Should I Get an Oil Change?

The answer to this question depends on the type of car you drive and the engine oil it uses. The best way to figure out how often your oil needs changing is to check your owner’s manual where you’ll find a recommendation from your vehicle’s manufacturer. On the other hand, a good rule of thumb to follow is to have your oil changed every 5,000 miles of driving. For many drivers, this equates to every six months or so. You may be able to change your oil less frequently if you use synthetic engine oil.

Image via Flickr by Dennis S. Hurd

Why Do I Need To Get an Oil Change?

Engine oil lubricates your engine so that its moving parts don’t get damaged when your vehicle is running. However, oil breaks down over time, reducing its effectiveness as a lubricant. It can also become contaminated by debris or dirt. For example, every time you turn on your car’s engine, there is a brief period of time during which the engine parts are not covered in oil, exposing them to more friction. Over time, this can cause particles of engine components to wear off, contaminating the oil.

These problems can be prevented by regularly changing out the old oil, replacing the oil filter, and adding fresh oil.

What Is Involved in an Oil Change?

When you come into Keith Pierson Toyota in Jacksonville for an oil change, one of our expert service team will start by draining your old engine oil. This is done by placing a receptacle under the engine to collect the oil, then opening the oil cap to drain it. Once the oil has drained, our technician will check your oil filter and replace it if necessary. This is a critical part of an oil change, because an old oil filter can no longer filter debris out of the oil while it flows around the engine. The new oil filter will help your engine oil do its job for a longer period of time.

What Benefits Do Regular Oil Changes Provide?

The first advantage of getting your oil changed regularly is that it will help lubricate your engine more effectively. If you fail to change your oil, sludge can build up on engine parts, which can reduce the performance of your vehicle. For instance, your engine’s power and fuel efficiency may be hampered because the sludge and debris produce more resistance when your engine is running.

The second benefit is that regular oil changes can lengthen the lifespan of your engine’s components. An engine that is constantly overworked due to a lack of lubrication from its oil will wear out sooner, resulting in damaged parts and an expensive repair bill.

Finally, getting a regular oil change provides our auto experts with the chance to inspect your vehicle for signs of other issues. Routine inspections like these can help identify issues before they become major problems, which will save you money over the long-term. For example, one of our mechanics can check if your brake pads are already worn out and in need of replacing.

What Should I Pay Attention to When Getting an Oil Change?

The main thing you’ll want to look out for is the cost of the service you’re getting. Reputable auto repair shops should only be charging you for the new oil they use to replace your existing oil, and an oil filter if necessary. Some service centers will offer you a free multi-point inspection as part of your oil change. If this shows up any additional problems, be sure to ask the auto technician you’re dealing with to explain any service costs your unsure about or unhappy with.

Here at Keith Pierson Toyota, we have a range of service coupons to help you save money on your routine maintenance needs, such as oil changes. It’s a good idea to check out our service coupon specials before you bring your vehicle into us so that we can offer you the best deal possible.

If any of the components of the braking system fail, it can lead to brake failure, which can be catastrophic. It’s very rare, however, for brakes to fail without some kind of warning signal, and knowing what signs to look and listen for is important.

If you live or work in Jacksonville or the surrounding areas of North Florida, you can bring your car to Keith Pierson Toyota to have your brakes checked and serviced by our professional technicians. Here are some of the odd noises your brakes could make and what might be causing them. If you hear any of these, it’s time to have your brakes looked at.

The zoo encourages both children and parents to dress in their favorite family-appropriate costumes while visiting the zoo. Kids can enjoy games and trick-or-treat for candy and prizes. Brave and older kids can enter a designated “scare zone.”

Past attractions have included a free-flow pathway, pumpkin patch, enchanted forest, and classic monsters at Range of the Jaguar. Additional bounce houses, games, and prizes are located throughout the zoo to help kids work off that extra candy energy. If the little ghosts and goblins get hungry or thirsty, the zoo snack shops, cafes, and gift shop have food and drink available for purchase. The usual zoo animals are available to see.

You can find the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens at 370 Zoo Parkway, Jacksonville, FL 32218. You can call the zoo at 904-757-4463. The event is free for children under 12 dressed in costume, but accompanying adults pay general admission prices. Note that you will have to order online tickets in advance.

Finance Tips

Jul 14, 2021

Financing a car can cost you thousands of dollars more than buying a vehicle for cash. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t finance. Financing can be the best way to go for several reasons — but only if you understand how to finance a car the right way. That’s why we’ve created the following tips to help you navigate the financing process without making some of the typical mistakes others have made.

Check Your Credit Score

Potential buyers should always check their credit scores before beginning to shop. Why? Because your credit score impacts your car loan more than any other factor. The higher the credit score, the lower the interest rate you’ll qualify for when you apply for a car loan. Conversely, the lower the credit score, the higher the interest rate you’ll end up with on your loan.

Credit experts recommend fixing any credit issues before applying for a loan. In many cases, people can improve their credit score without too much effort or even money. A decrease from 7% to 5% APR on a $20,000 five-year loan can save you over $1,100.

Get Competing Loan Offers

Before arriving at a dealership, we recommend shopping for car loans with several institutions. You can start with your bank or credit union, as these institutions typically offer existing customers discounted rates. You can shop around at other local banks to see what they offer, too. We also recommend searching online for some national lenders. Sometimes, national companies are able to offer better rates than smaller, regional banks because they benefit from a higher volume of loan customers. After shopping around, you can use our online finance application to get pre-approved for an auto loan as a comparison.

When comparing loans, you want to look first at your interest rate and then at the length of the loan. You might qualify for a 5% interest rate with one lender and 7% with another, but if the length of the 5% loan runs two years longer than the 7% loan, you’ll pay more in interest over the life of the 5% loan.

Figure Out Your Budget

Ultimately, your monthly loan payment must fit within your budget. We recommend a thorough examination of your monthly income and expenses to determine how much you can afford to spend each month on your loan. You also need to factor in your car insurance costs. Many lenders require additional insurance like gap insurance and collision coverage to protect them against a total loss of the vehicle. These insurance policies cost more money, and if you haven’t had them on previous plans, you can expect to pay $100 or more each month.

Determine What You Need in a Car

Now that you’ve fixed your credit, found competing loans, and planned out your budget, the fun of actually shopping for a car can begin. Before you set foot on a dealership’s lot, take the time to make a list of the features you need in a car, truck, or SUV. Say you commute to Jacksonville every day. In that case, you’ll need something fuel-efficient and safe. If your job requires you to bring tools, equipment, and supplies to work each day, you probably need a pickup.

You can make a second list of features you’d like to have but can live without. Maybe some of the latest driver-assist features like adaptive cruise control would be nice, but if you only occasionally get on the highway, you probably could do without them.

A third list — perhaps the most helpful of all — should contain all those features you don’t need or want. This third list will help you avoid paying for bells and whistles you don’t care about. For instance, a four-wheel-drive truck can be a lot of fun for those off-road adventurers, but if you never go off the road, why pay extra money for that feature?

Money Down

If you have at least a portion of the money needed to purchase a car, you should put as much of that as you can afford toward a down payment. Putting money down will lower the amount you have to borrow and ultimately reduce the amount of interest you pay over the life of the loan. A down payment will lower your monthly payment as well.

The only time you don’t want to spend your money for some or all of a car purchase would be if you could earn more in a savings or investment account instead. If a dealership gives you a zero-percent interest rate, there’s no need to put extra money down. You can earn 1-2% interest in most savings accounts. Suppose you have a stock portfolio that returns 7% annually, and you qualify for a 5% interest rate. In that case, you’re better off keeping your money in the stock portfolio rather than using it as a down payment because you’ll net 2% profit by keeping there.

Keep the Loan Term as Short as Possible

Keeping the loan term short will save you money in the long run. However, there’s a trade-off here that involves your monthly payment increasing or perhaps the need for a higher down payment. Buyers must strike a balance between loan length and monthly affordability. At Keith Pierson Toyota, our finance department experts have years of experience finding the correct loan terms to fit any financial situation.

A shorter loan will help you avoid getting upside down on your loan. Being upside-down refers to owing more than the actual value of your car, and it happens far more often than you might think. Insurance costs more when you’re upside down, too, so you should avoid it if you can.

At Keith Pierson Toyota, we know finding the right financing package can be the difference between buying the car of your dreams or settling for something less. That’s why our finance team has cultivated so many relationships with local and national lenders. We leverage these relationships every day to find our customers the best rates and terms possible.

We don’t want to sell you a car you can’t afford. We want you to enjoy an experience that fits your needs and budget — one you’ll want to repeat and recommend to your friends and family. We invite you to explore our loan options online or come sit down with one of our friendly, knowledgeable finance team members to discuss your situation. No matter what financial concerns you have, our team can find you a loan that makes sense.

A battery provides the power needed to start your car. Therefore, it’s essential to have one that’s in good condition. Auto batteries have a lifespan of about three to five years, so everyone is likely to experience a failing battery at some point. Luckily, there are some warning signs you can look out for to tell if a battery needs replacing.

Signs That Your Battery Needs Replacing

One of the first indicators of a weak battery is an engine that takes some time to start. Under normal conditions, the battery provides power to start your engine as soon as you turn the ignition or press the push-button start. But when a battery starts to deteriorate, it struggles to hold enough charge, causing your starter to take a few seconds to get the engine going.

Another warning sign is if your headlights dim significantly when you start your car before lighting up as normal when the engine starts. The reason for this could be that your battery isn’t retaining enough charge to power your vehicle’s accessories.

You can also perform a visual inspection of your battery to check its health. Batteries in poor condition may develop a film on top or corrosion on its ports. Corrosion typically appears as a white or yellow substance, and occurs because the acid in the battery is escaping. You can wash off the corrosion using a battery brush temporarily, but it is still a good idea to get your battery checked out to make sure it’s still ok.

If your battery is dying, you may here a clicking sound when you try to start your car. This usually suggests that your battery has lost all its charge and can no longer start your engine. While it may be possible for you to jump start your car in an emergency, you should immediately get your battery changed to avoid future problems.

Keep in mind that batteries don’t perform well if your vehicle has been sitting unused for a long period of time. For example, if you haven’t driven your car in a month and it takes a few seconds to start up, this may not necessarily mean that your battery is dying.

How to Test a Battery

One of the simplest ways to test your battery is to use a multimeter. First, check that your multimeter is set between 15 and 20 volts. Then, place the negative and positive connectors on the corresponding ports on your battery. Check the multimeter’s screen to get the reading.

If the reading is below 12.5 volts, you should probably charge your battery. Any reading below 12 volts is an indication that your battery is very weak and that it may be time for a replacement.

If you don’t have a multimeter, you can test your battery by switching on your headlights without turning on the Engine. Leave your headlights on for 15 minutes, then try to start your car. If your engine won’t start, this shows that your battery can’t retain a charge and requires replacement.

Replacing Your Battery

While you may be concerned about the cost of replacing your battery, the good news is that you can get a high quality battery for a modest price. The exact cost will vary depending on the requirements of your vehicle, but most batteries are generally priced between $50 and $150. Premium batteries can cost significantly more but are not required for most vehicles.

The main thing to keep in mind when choosing a new battery is to check the specifications of your old one to ensure that you purchase an appropriate battery for your car. Firstly, check your owner’s manual to find out the group size of your battery. This is an important piece of information because it will make sure that you buy a battery that fits snugly into the battery tray.

Secondly, consult your owner’s manual to determine the recommended reserve capacity for your battery. The reserve capacity refers to the amount of time your battery can hold enough charge to power your vehicle. The recommended reserve capacity varies by vehicle manufacturer.

The final thing to check about a battery is its cold cranking amps rating, which tells you how able a battery is to start your car in cold weather. If you choose a battery with a cold cranking amps rating that’s too low for your car, you may experience problems with it later on.
