The Toyota RAV4 and the Ford Escape are five-seat compact crossover SUVs with virtually identical starting prices. But a few differences might make one a better choice overall for your next vehicle in Jacksonville, Florida. In contrast, the Escape has a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that produces 181 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque, or if you're willing to spend enough, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 250 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. The 2023 RAV4 and the 2023 Escape can tow small or midsize trailers. The RAV4 Hybrid XSE model has a towing capacity of 1,750 lbs. Both crossover SUVs have the same standard-engine towing capacity of 1,500 lbs., with a maximum towing capability of 3,500 lbs. In terms of efficiency, the gasoline RAV4 gets up to 30 combined mpg, just like the Escape. The hybrid performance is similar, giving only a small edge to the Escape. RAV4 vs. Escape: Passenger and Cargo Space You might wonder whether the 2023 RAV4 or the 2023 Escape is roomier. The RAV4 has good space for passengers and cargo, with 37.8 inches of legroom in the second row and 36.6 cubic feet of space behind that row. When you remove the RAV4's rear seats, the total cargo space increases to 69.8 cubic feet. While the Ford Escape has slightly larger front and rear legroom and a cargo area of 37.5 cubic feet, the total available cargo area with the seats down is smaller at only 65.4 cubic feet. RAV4 vs. Escape: Infotainment Features The RAV4 LE and XLE trims have an 8.0-inch infotainment display secured in the dashboard, while the XSE and Limited versions have a 10.5-inch screen. While base 2023 Ford Escape models include an 8.0-inch infotainment system, the Active and higher trims have an optional 13.2-inch touch-screen display. In-dash navigation, a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, a head-up display, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge display are also available. So, for infotainment features, the RAV4 offers more competitive sound systems and display technologies as standard features on different trim levels. The Escape only offers equivalent features on certain trims if you add them through packages. RAV4 vs. Escape: Safety Features The Toyota RAV4 includes Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, with features such as lane departure warning with steering assist, lane tracing assist, and road sign recognition. It also has front collision warning with automated emergency braking and pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with automatic braking and rear cross-traffic alerts, and front and rear park assist. The Escape offers a similar package through its Co-Pilot360 bundle, which can include Ford's semi-autonomous hands-free highway driving mode. However, this feature has limited access throughout the United States and requires the most expensive trim levels. In contrast, all 2023 RAV4 models have adaptive cruise control that operates at all speeds. The Escape only offers this option on the Active trim or higher. The Jacksonville Tourism Office had a creative idea to compel tourists and locals to indulge in the Jacksonville area's booming craft brewery market. They came up with the JAX Ale Trail, which features a bunch of breweries in downtown Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, and the nearby regions. What's the JAX Ale Trail? So, what's the JAX Ale Trail, and how does it work? The trail is a list of local craft breweries you visit on your self-guided tour. The first step is to get a JAX Ale Trail Brewery Passport, available at any of the breweries on the trail or one of the visitor centers listed on the JAX Ale Trail website. Once you have the passport, head down the trail and sample some of the brews offered, and when you do, make sure you have the bartender stamp your passport. In addition to enjoying some tasty beers, you can also win prizes once you have a few stamps collected. If you fill out the passport, you can claim all the prizes. Collecting Prizes Not only will there be fantastic craft beers along the trail, but there are also prizes. Once your passport is full, go to the visitor center located in downtown Jacksonville to turn in your stamped passport and collect your prize(s). If you're pressed for time, you can also mail in the back page of your passport, and they'll send you the prize. The best plan is to make sure you hit up the visitor center before you're out of time, especially if you're only in town for a few days. Pinglehead Red Ale is another imperial/double that checks in at 7.8% ABV and 20 international bitterness units (IBUs). The higher the number, the more bitter it is. Any beer 45 IBUs and up is considered to be a bitter one. This red features hints of sweet caramel with undertones of floral hops. Duke's Cold Nose Brown Ale As the name may imply, this mild brown ale was named after the owner's beloved, late boxer, Duke. This one is a big favorite of the locals and has notes of caramel and chocolate and finishes off with a smooth nutty flavor. This brown ale is flavorful and well-balanced enough to be enjoyed year-round. Through changes to trim levels, new infotainment systems, and more, the 2023 Corolla has even more going for it than last year, and it also wins out against other 2023 compact cars. The Corolla's most notable competitors include the Honda Civic, Subaru Impreza, and Hyundai Elantra. Exterior and Trims The redesigned front and back fascias of the 2023 Toyota Corolla give it a refresh without compromising on its classic appeal. The Corolla Hybrid comes in three trim levels: LE, SE, and XLE. The SE and XLE are all-new additions for 2023, expanding from what was once a single-trim vehicle. The gas-powered 2023 Corolla, meanwhile, streamlines to four trim levels by losing the starting L and the Apex trims, leaving the LE, SE, XLE, and XSE. Depending on your choice of trim, you can make the exterior as utilitarian or fancy as you like. Each competitor offers a lot of similar benefits as the Corolla. The 2023 Honda Civic has the same five trim levels as it did before: LX, Sport, EX, Touring, and Si, but the big news is the reintroduction of the Civic Type R Hatchback. LED headlights with a contemporary dual-low-beam design are standard on every Civic Sedan. Six model levels of the 2023 Hyundai Elantra are available: SE, SEL, Limited Gas, N Line, Blue Hybrid, and Limited Hybrid. And while it offers decent cargo and passenger volume, lower trim levels can look a little plain. Unlike the Elantra, the Subaru Impreza and Honda Civic are available as a sedan or five-door hatchback. However, picking those options may cost you more than a 2023 Toyota Corolla. Boiling it all down: the Corolla has good length and width for its class, great exterior options, and an overall style anyone can appreciate. Interior Features The Corolla's interior provides more than just comfort and high-quality surfaces. It cradles you with an eight-way power driver seat with power lumbar support. You'll find models offering SofTex seats, a push-button sunroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and configurable digital displays. The Honda Civic may be the Corolla's closest competitor in this regard, featuring modest styling, beautiful honeycomb metal mesh running through the dash, and clean lines. One advantage for the Corolla, though, is the option of adding a remote trunk release and a universal garage door opener. The Subaru Impreza doubtlessly carries its appealing design and comfortable cabin; however, lower-quality plastic and other cost-cutting details may turn off some customers. The Hyundai Elantra's interior also packs plenty of the same benefits. The SEL offers a Convenience package, which adds two 10.25-inch displays: one for the driver and the other for the infotainment system. However, there are a few strange discrepancies. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto change from wireless to wired connectivity only with the Convenience package, and the two cheapest trim levels lack the 60/40-split folding rear seats. Engine and Performance For 2023, the Corolla swapped out a 139-horsepower engine under the hood for a 2.0-liter Dynamic Force engine with 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. An available Dynamic-Shift continuously variable transmission (CVT) combines the quick reaction of a conventional manual with a gearless automatic shifter. The 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the Honda Civic continues to produce 180 horsepower, like last year, while the 2.0-liter four-cylinder on the base model continues to output 158 horsepower. As per usual, the Civic only offers front-wheel drive. A six-speed manual will still be offered for the hatchback model, but all other models are stuck with an unremarkable CVT. As for the Impreza, all 2023 models use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 152 horsepower. Despite having less potent engines than the Corolla, the Impreza comes standard with all-wheel drive. While Subaru is known for its brand of active all-wheel drive, the Corolla gives you a choice between that or front-wheel drive. The Elantra, with a 2.0-liter I-4 with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, also doesn't measure up against the 2023 Toyota Corolla. Fuel Economy The Corolla offers a highly frugal hybrid option and a still-efficient four-cylinder engine. The front-wheel-drive hybrid achieves 50 city mpg and 43 highway mpg, while the all-wheel-drive hybrid is predicted to achieve 47 city mpg and 41 highway mpg. By contrast, the 2023 Honda Civic gets 35 mpg overall, from 33 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the interstate. The Impreza can achieve up to 28 city mpg and 36 highway mpg. Customers and drivers of Hyundai vehicles may anticipate the Elantra to deliver up to an EPA-estimated 33 city mpg and 43 highway mpg rating with the basic SE trim. With an EPA-estimated 25 city mpg and 34 highway mpg, the N Line's basic manual transmission will boost the power but sacrifice gas mileage. Overall, the Corolla is superior in fuel economy, greatly increasing its long-term affordability. Safety Ratings The Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic are equipped with various security and driving aids prepared to help mitigate and prevent crashes in multiple ways. Both received the highest Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rating, the Top Safety Pick+ designation, in 2022, and these awards are likely to be awarded again. The Impreza Hatchback and Hyundai Elantra were given the second-tier IIHS Top Safety Pick designation, while the Impreza Sedan won no safety awards from the IIHS. Your vehicle features an abundance of handy warning lights that will let you know if it's operating correctly or needs some extra attention. Many of the lights on the dashboard simply alert you to things that are functioning properly. For example, the traction control light illuminates when your car is properly utilizing its traction and stability control features. However, many lights are designed to highlight potentially more serious problems. If you see the following lights illuminated in your vehicle, you should take prompt action to make sure you're staying safe on the road. Schedule Service Appointment Check Engine Light The check engine light, shaped like the silhouette of an engine, can be one of the most serious warning lights on your dashboard. Even if your car seems fine, you should investigate the cause of this warning because it may give you just enough heads up to avoid disaster by detecting a problem before you can. In many cases, the check engine light will illuminate for a minor issue, such as a loose wire or faulty sensor, but you should never take a chance. If this light is accompanied by any kind of strange behavior from your car, pull over and call for a tow truck immediately. Engine Temperature Warning Light The engine temperature warning light is an extremely important indicator. This light looks like a thermometer suspended above wavy lines. In some vehicles, the light features the word "TEMP." This light comes on when your engine is running at dangerously hot temperatures. If you don't address the issue, this could permanently damage your engine, leading to an extremely costly repair. The engine temperature warning light may come on due to a broken radiator, faulty water pump, low coolant levels, broken fan, or other problems. When you see this light, you should quickly pull over and turn off your car to allow the engine to cool down. Don't pop the hood immediately as the steam from the engine can burn you. Call for a tow and have a mechanic look at your car right away. Engine Oil Warning Light Shaped like an old-fashioned oil can, the engine oil warning light lets you know that there's something wrong with the oil pressure system. You may have a broken oil pump, a low oil level, or an oil leak. If you continue to drive your car in this state, your engine can suffer serious or even irreparable damage. Pull over immediately to investigate the problem. You may be able to resolve the engine oil warning light by topping off the oil in your car. If this causes the light to go off, you can typically make it to your nearest mechanic. Even if the light turns off, you should still investigate the underlying cause of the alert to make sure you're not steadily losing oil or dealing with another ongoing problem. Battery Charge Warning Light The battery warning light looks like a car battery, complete with positive and negative symbols. This light will alert you to an aging battery that's about to die. The light can also clue you into issues with the alternator, wiring, or other electrical components that are inhibiting the battery's ability to charge properly. You should investigate the cause of this warning light promptly or you may find yourself stuck without enough battery to get to your next destination. Brake Warning Light The brake warning light looks like a circle within parentheses with an exclamation point in the center. This indicates that either your parking brake is engaged or there's a problem with your brake system. Begin by checking to make sure the parking brake is fully disengaged. You can also try topping off the brake fluid. If these actions don't resolve the issue, you shouldn't drive your vehicle until you can get it checked out. Driving without functioning brakes is extremely dangerous. If this light comes on while you're already on the road, pull over immediately. Tire Pressure Warning Lights The tire pressure warning light features a circle that's open on the top with an exclamation point in the center and slight treads on the bottom. This light means that your tires are either over- or under-inflated. In newer vehicles, you may have an infotainment system that will tell you the exact pressure of each tire so you can diagnose the problem quickly. Though this light doesn't necessitate a trip to the mechanic, it's still something that you should address. If your tires aren't inflated properly, they're at a greater risk of blowing out. Adjust the tire pressure to the recommended level as soon as possible so you can safely hit the road once again. Transmission Temperature Warning The transmission temperature light shows a thermometer inside a circle that looks like a gear. This indicates an overheated transmission, which could be the result of worn transmission parts, heavy towing, low transmission fluid, or other issues. You should check your coolant levels first to see if topping off this fluid will resolve your issue, at least temporarily. If the light stays illuminated, you shouldn't drive your vehicle until you can have it checked out by a mechanic. Continuing to operate your vehicle at extreme temperatures will cause severe damage to essential components. Lamp Out Light If one of the headlights or taillights in your car has burned out, this warning light will illuminate. This feature alerts you to the need for a quick fix. Though one light may seem like a minor issue, you should replace the bulb immediately.
